The hotel and its history
On February 14, 1883, rue du Centre, considered one of the most beautiful streets of its time, was renamed rue Garat.
This street, extended by draining a swamp as far as Boulevard du Marais, opened onto Rue Gambetta, a lively shopping area frequented by locals and visitors attracted by the new bathing establishment. At the corner of these streets was the Hôtel de France, popular with French, Spanish and English clientele, supplemented in 1880 by the Hôtel d’Angleterre and the Hôtel de la Plage.
The street is named after Bernard Garat, a privateer from Luzère. In 1810, aboard the brig Tilsit, he captured several enemy ships laden with precious merchandise. After numerous battles, including two English brigs and a warship, the Tilsit managed to return to Pasajes harbor despite its damage, thanks to the courage of its crew.
